Precise Prosthetics for Elite Athletes

Precise Prosthetics for Elite Athletes Precise Prosthetics for Elite Athletes During the 2016 Paralympic Games, many runners, cyclers, and swimmers wore one or more prosthetic limbs. Because they made it look so easy, viewers may not have realized the feats of engineering that go into creating prosthetics specialized to athletic pursuit.Tailoring a prosthetic to its wearer requires precision and skill, and that counts double when that person is engaged in climbing mountains or moving toward Olympic-level goals.Take, for example, Hugh Herr, who has made it his lifes work to restore full and natural limb function to those who have lost limbs.Herr is director of the Biomechatronics Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and hes no stranger to the troubles faced by athletes with prosthetic limbs. Hugh Herr lost both legs to frostbite while rock climbing in New Hampshires White Mountains in 1982.As a wearer, he soon discovered that prosthetics dont mimic the exact menschenger echt gait and they have other inaccuracies that can make them difficult to use during athletic performance or even everyday exercise like jogging, he says.As a scientist, hes helping to create biohybrid prosthetics that work in natural harmony with the humans who wear them. In the near future, wearers will control the prosthetic limbs the way most everyone controls their natural arms and legs without a thought, he says.Today Herr wears two prosthetic legs that help him climb with even greater facility than before the amputations. The prosthetic toes stiffness makes it possible to stand on the edges of small rocks, and the feet feature titanium spikes to help him climb steep ice walls. His group has spent time analyzing the human gait to better mimic it through advanced mechanical and electrical interfaces that work in tandem with the prosthetic, he says.A racing cyclist wearing a cycloergometer and a test prosthesis, at Fraunhofer movement lab. Image FraunhoferCycling ChallengesProst hetics that exactly fit will allow their wearers to climb mountains or cycle to victory, says Florian Blab, a Fraunhofer scientist working on a project that would put an end to the time-consuming and expensive fitting procedure athletes now go through to fit a prosthetic limb tailored to their needs.Biking with a prosthetic limb is particularly challenging due to the way the knee moves as the cyclist pedals. Although there are prosthetic limbs designed specifically for cyclists, its not easy to find an artificial limb that works for athletes.Usually, cyclists must have many different versions of expensive prosthetics made to find the one most suitable, like Cinderellas slipper. Prosthetics made for cyclists are not one-size-fits-all because cyclists have different physical limitations. After the best fit is found, orthopedic technicians adjust an athletes prosthetic by hand, Blab says.He and other researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation I PA in Stuttgart have equipped a movement lab and built a mobile, biomechanical measuring station and developed a suitable test prosthetic. The test prosthesis is helping to quickly and precisely fit the artificial limb to the individual athlete, Blab adds.Data DrivenThe software model theyre creating will return information specific to the athlete. Using that information, technicians can adjust the prosthesis exactly to the cyclists, even adjusting for the perceptions and minute corrections they make as they cycle, Blab says.Blabs specialties at the institute sports medicine, biophysics, and physiology, have converged on the project. He also competes in the sport of artistic cycling and has competed in the UCI Indoor Cycling World Championships, taking home a silver medal yearly in the mens single division from 2008 to 2012.He and other researchers on the project are at work now establishing testing parameters the measurements that will gauge how well a prosthesis fits and how an at hlete moves. With those parameters in hand, they can adjust it to precisely match the wearers physical characteristics, training level, and body weight. We can adjust the test prosthesis perfectly for each person, Blab says. For the first time, were taking the athletes subjective perceptions to a scientific level. The test subjects are cyclists at German training camp for the 2016 Paralympics held in September. The Fraunhofer lab hopes for a long-term collaboration with German Paralympic cycling team.To find the initial parameters, an athlete with markers attached to different points on the body pedals a stationary bike in the movement lab. As they pedal, eight to twelve infrared cameras record the position of each marker to within half a millimeter. Sensors on the pedals measure the force the athlete applies to the pedals in all three spatial directions. This data tells us both how much force the joint exerts and how much work the muscles are doing, Blab says. The researchers then run the data theyve collected through software that simulates all possible adjustments and identifies the best three or four, which the scientists test with the athlete as he or she cycles. The tests return information about precise settings for the prosthetic, including the length of the prosthesis, the position of the ball of the foot, and the point at which the sole is attached to the bike pedal, Blab says.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We can adjust the test prosthesis perfectly for each person. For the first time, were taking the athletes subjective perceptions to a scientific level.Florian Blab, Fraunhofer Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA

A traditional-style resume is ideal if you are interested in finding employment in a conventional medical office or hospital. Study the following tips to get a better idea of how to create a traditional medical assistant resume that places you above your peers.Create ResumeCustomize ResumeWhat to Include in a Traditional Medical Assistant ResumeThe trick to creating an eye-catching traditional resume is to take your time. Carefully consider every word you place on the page and the impact it could have on the recruiter or hiring manager who will be reading it. Be sure to include any experience that you have in the clinical, a dministrative and surgical areas often required for medical assistants. Additionally, include any information about your level of training, including certifications and education. Remember, all of your experience, your career path and the job to which you are applying can significantly affect how your resume turns out.Common Resume Fails Mistakes to AvoidNot Being Specific If you fail to give the specifics of your accomplishments, they wont look very enticing to a potential employer. Take the time to go into detail and explain why what you did was impressive.Failing to Individualize Employers like to be wooed and to know that you want the position they are offering bad enough that you can at least tailor your resume to fit their specific position. If you dont specialize each resume, it may be more likely to end up in the garbage than it is catching a recruiters eye.Too Condensed Your resume needs to be complete and informative without becoming visually displeasing. If a hiring manag er cannot read your resume easily, she will not try a second time.Failing to Proofread If you fail to proofread a resume, it indicates that you are not serious about wanting a position with that company. Exhausted Working Moms Deserve a Guilt-Free Day Off

Exhausted Working Moms Deserve a Guilt-Free Day OffExhausted Working Moms Deserve a Guilt-Free Day OffWorking mothers are often pushed to the point of exhaustion nowadays. They find it hard to fit in time just for themselves, and when they do, they may feel guilty about not doing something work- or child-related instead. Practicing self-care, including taking the occasional day off from both work and childcare responsibilities, is vital in helping working mothers fight those worn-out feelings and see themselves as people with needs and wants beyond their careers and kids. In addition, American culture needs to evolve to enable working mothers to discard unreasonable expectations of achieving a perfect work-home balance and ideally bring about structural social changes so that all the responsibility for working mothers health and happiness isnt placed on individual moms. More Time Working, More Time Raising Children notlage only are working mothers spending more time working than their counterparts in the 60s did, theyre also spending more time at being mothers. According to the Pew Research Center (PRC), working mothers spent about 25 hours a week at their job in 2016, compared with nine hours in 1965. They spent 14 hours a week on child care, compared with 10 hours a week 51 years earlier. Women face economic and societal pressures to do it all Seventy percent of mothers with at least one child younger than 18 worked outside the home in 2015, compared with 47 percent in 1975, according to the PRC. And in 40 percent of U.S. families, mothers were the primary breadwinners. Despite that last statistic, 77 percent of those polled by the PRC said women face a lot of pressure to be an involved parent, while only 56 percent said the same is true of men. Working mothers are also spending less time at home with newborns. Because only 17 percent of workers are offered paid parental leave through their job, almost half of women take less than two months of maternity leave and almost one in four take less than two weeks off after giving birth. Self-Care and Child Care Parent educator Janet Lansbury told USA Today that working mothers need to see self-care as a necessary thing separate from child care. If were feeling like we have to keep our child happy and fulfill their every desire and ride the waves of their emotions, all of those things are not going to allow us to have self-care, Lansbury said. So my focus with parents is helping them to see their child as a whole person, so you can be in an actual relationship with them where its not you just servicing them all the time. Working moms need to take time out for themselves on occasion, without shame, whether its spending a few hours in the park with a book or a day or weekend away with a bestie. They shouldnt be afraid to ask for help from family members and friends- or afraid of being perceived as not committed or caring enough- when they have hit a wall. A Cultural Issue Caitlyn Col lins, a sociology professor at Washington University, studied how women balanced their work and home lives in the U.S., Germany, Italy, and Sweden. Moms in the U.S. had the most difficult time achieving some semblance of balance. Across the countries where I conducted interviews, one desire remained constant among mothers, Collins wrote in her book Making Motherhood Work How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving, as reported by Psychology Today. Women wanted to feel that they were able to combine paid employment and child-rearing in a way that seemed equitable and didnt disadvantage them at home or at work. Collins reported U.S. mothers were least able to fulfill that desire because they lack cultural and institutional untersttzung. The United States is an outlier among Western Industrialized countries for its lack of support for working mothers, she wrote. Working mothers dealt with more guilt and conflicts between their career and home lives than their European counterparts. Women w ho are committed to their careers but take too much time away for their family are thought to violate the work devotion schema, while those who avoid or delegate their familial commitments violate the family devotion schema, Collins wrote. She told Psychology Today that women need to stop trying to live up to the unrealistic goal of perfectly combining work and childcare. I want American moms to stop blaming themselves, she said. I want American mothers to stop thinking that somehow their conflict is their own fault and that if they tried a little harder, got a new schedule, woke up a little earlier every morning, using the right planner or the right app, that they could somehow figure out the key to managing their stress. Thats just not the case. A Collective Solution Collins said American society has to collectively make it easier for working mothers to live without guilt and with a healthy helping of self-care. This is a structural problem, she said. So it requires structural solutions. No individual solution is going to fix this. Thats the point Im trying to drive home. We live in a culture where we highly value individualism, and we dont think about the collective. Ever. For sociologists, our entire job is to think through how structure impacts our daily life. This research has shown me that we need a collective, structural solution.

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley Hope Groupons IPO Has HappGoldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley Hope Groupons IPO Has HappGroupon, the company that offers its customers deals such as a $135 full-body massage for just $53, is reportedly on the verge of an IPO thats being valued at $25 billion. And rumored to have their hands all over that public offering are the two giants of Wall Street Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley which stand to make tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars in fees if they end up co-managing the offering. In addition, Andrew Mason, the CEO and founder of Groupon, the daily-deal market leader, stands to make Zuckerberg-like money.Whether or not Groupon actually garners the $25 billion remains to be seen (Goldman and Morgan Stanley bankers are likely running the numbers right now) but one man who believes Groupons valuation is more than fair is Andrew Zalasin, the CFO of venture capital firm RRE Ventures.Zalasin has been following Groupon since its inception and s ays the reason the firm is worth so much is simple (1) people have a great experience when they use Groupon and use it repeatedly, (2) users of Groupon tend to tell their friends how great Groupon is and unterstellung friends, in turn, also have great experiences using Groupon and use it repeatedly, and (3) Groupon (unlike Twitter and Facebook) actually makes money Groupon does this by taking a piece of the discounted services its customers purchase through its site. All of this is why Groupon has grown revenues (and users) by 100 percent in the past three months, and why the firms valuation has risen from $6 billion at the end of 2010 to its current, very cool $25 billion. As for why Groupon is considering accessing the public markets now, Zalasin points to Wall Streets current appetite for Groupon-like firms, citing JPMorgans new social media fund and, of course, Goldman Sachs recent Facebook investment.(Bloomberg)(Related Goldmans Great Facebook Retreat)

Diversity in Engineering At Rover

Diversity in Engineering At Rover Below is an article originally written by Adam Stewart at PowerToFly Partner Rover, and published on May 9, 2018. Go to Rovers page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more. One of the many problems facing the tech world is a lack of diversity. At a previous position in my career, I was in a diversity training program with 32 people. Thirty of them were white males. Now that Im at Rover, Im proud to say that diversity is something we spend a lot of time and resources addressing and its reflected in the diversity of our team. We feel that implicit biases and subjectivity in the hiring process should be actively addressed and, to the extent possible while still evaluating a candidate as a whole person, removed from the picture.Borne from one of behauptung conversations was the need to make our hiring process as anonymous as possible to remove bias, and we started by looking at the take-home coding challenge. As part of our normal enginee ring interview process, we give candidates a challenge to work on independently and return to us. Our goal with the take home coding challenge is to solely review a candidates coding and design abilities, independent of the candidates past work and years of experience. In theory, this is the place in our hiring funnel that can be completely scored based on technical skills. To accomplish this, we realized we needed to revise the take-home project to be anonymous in reservierung to mitigate any implicit biases a reviewer may have. With the full support of management, I added tickets for this to my sprint schedule. This had an impact on the velocity of my normal work, but it was the right thing to do. I worked with the hiring managers and other interested people across several teams to design and review the new process to get a system that would work for everyone.Process Change Our old processBefore the anonymization project, when a candidate started the take-home challenge, we would create a new Github repository based on their Github username to maintain unique naming patterns. This project would be shared with the candidate for them to finish. Once the candidate was finished and had committed the last bit of code and documentation, they would notify the hiring manager. The hiring manager would then get two engineers to review the code, and would add them to the Github repository. They would also add them to our hiring software as reviewers so they could input the results. This software sends out an email with deadlines and information. It also allowed the reviewer to see the resume, phone screen results, and some other information about the candidate in order to make a more informed decision. Once our internal review was complete, the results were submitted to the hiring manager who would make a decision on the candidate and if they should make it to the next step in the process. Our new processWe decided there wasnt enough value i n seeing the candidates whole set of information (resume, name, years of experience, etc.) to justify letting any internal biases affect our decisions. Therefore, we first removed the candidates Github username from the repository name. Now the projects only have a date and two initials as an identifier. This keeps the repositories unique without exposing the candidates choice of username.Since some candidates leave identifiable information such as adding files based on their name, or signing their readme file, we needed to do something to prevent that. We now have instructions emailed to the candidate that inform them that they should not include any personal information in the project. After the candidate is finished with the project, the hiring manager runs a short script against the candidates repository that replaces the candidates username with the hiring managers username. This preserves the log messages, which can be valuable, but obscures who actually did the commits. The next difference in the process is that the hiring manager no longer adds the reviewers to the hiring software until after the review. The Github access is granted, and that is the only link the reviewer has into the candidate. The reviewer can now review the code as a standalone set of data without any bias. The final change is that once the code review is complete, the reviewer submits the review in a new document that is sent to the hiring manager. The hiring manager can then copy and paste the review contents in the hiring software at this point, and complete this part of the interview.Looking forwardThis whole change in the process puts a little more workload on the hiring managers, but we felt it was important to implement. They now manually run an extra script to anonymize the Github repository, and they copyaste the review into our hiring software. This only adds a couple of minutes to each candidate. As a company, Rover is committed to hiring a diverse team. Diversity attracts mor e people and is a sign of a healthy and inclusive culture. It creates a more welcoming workplace. It can spark creativity and empathy, and allows the team to better help the people we serve. We are constantly trying to reduce biases in all aspects of our company culture, and an anonymized coding challenge is one small but necessary step towards that. Aki Merced

Pressure Vessels in Space

Pressure Vessels in Space Pressure Vessels in Space Pressure Vessels in SpaceA weightless, infinitely strong tank of no cost is the dream of any company needing to find some way to store whatever it might be that they need compressed. Though this platonic ideal may remain philosophically beyond our grasp, the folks at Composite Technology Development (CTD) have made great strides in that direction with their Kiboko pressure vessels. The history of pressure vessel schriftarts has been one of gradual lightening toward that ideal. From the type I propane anvils attached to every backyard grill to the type IV tanks holding the hydrogen for fuel cell-powered cars, pressure vessel manufacturers attempt to make the lightest vessels their customers can afford. To do so, they have tried to limit the amount of metal in their products, adding composite materials to the cylinder for type II, wrapping an aluminum liner with composite plies for type III, and further reducing the presence of metal by using a composite-wrapped plastic liner for type IV vessels. KIBOKO Linerless Composite Pressure Vessels.Photo CTDThe engineers at CTD decided to do away with the liner altogether. Their tanks, which they call type V, are made of a composite wrapped around some tooling, which is subsequently removed. What gives the vessel its strength is the resin that holds the carbon fiber together. CTD put their money, and time, into making a microcrack-resistant resin. With other composite-made vessels, the resin is just what holds together the fibers. Usually its the first mode of failure, forming microcracks that can cause leakage. We dont get any cracking in our resin until the fibers fail, says Mike Tupper, CTDs executive vice president. We designed the tanks for maximum performance of fibers and dont have to worry about the resin failing. The founder of the company, a Kenyan, named the vessels Koboko, which is Swahili for hippopotamus. A hippopotamus looks like a tank and has very tough skin, explains Tupper. The result is a product ideal for any application in which low weight is paramount. For their self-contained breathing apparatuses, firemen currently use type III vessels that weigh between six and a half and seven and a half pounds. A type V SCBA would weigh between five and a half and six pounds. A fireman going into a fire is carrying 75 pounds of gear, says Tupper. So with every pound you cut, you can literally save lives. The production of type IV vessels is something of an art form, with a failure rate of between five and ten percent, often prohibitively high for anyone needing a large vessel. Manufacturing the Koboko, however, will eventually be a much more regular affair, and Tupper says the cost of making them will keep them competitive. But the competition theyre really after is the space race. CTD had a background in making cryogenic electrical insulation for superconducting magnets and they used the same materials with the Koboko to make cryogenic tanks. The combination of light weight and cold resistance makes them ideal for aerospace applications. Several years ago, the University of Texas was working on an Air Force-funded nanosatellite when the pressure vessel they were using failed. They contacted Tupper asking if he could build a replacement. The trick was that they needed a qualified tank in six weeks. The engineers at CTD, who had never designed a tank for that particular size and purpose, worked day and night. They built and tested 21 tanks and were able to deliver four on time. Its maybe not the most cost-effective tank, but we were successful. We did it, says Tupper. That nanosatellite, Fastrac, launched this November, making the argon-carrying Koboko the first linerless composite tank to fly in space. Were very grateful, says Tupper. They had our logo facing out. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. The founder of the company, a Kenyan, named the vessels Koboko, which is Swahili for hippopotamus. Qualifying for Unemployment Benefits

Qualifying for Unemployment Benefits Qualifying for Unemployment Benefits Have you recently lost your job? During this scary and frustrating time, you may be asking yourself, “Do I qualify for unemployment?” and “How will I pay my bills until I find something else?” Unemployment benefits are available for workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own. There are eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment benefits including working a certain number of weeks for a certain number of hours each week. But even if you’ve been terminated for cause, don’t assume you’re out of luck. You may be able to collect, regardless. It’s worth it to learn about your rights including your right to appeal a denial of your unemployment claims before you give up on the idea of filing for benefits.   Qualifying for Unemployment Eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment compensation vary from state to state. However, according to the Department of Labor, there are only two main criteria that must be met in order to qualify: 1.  You must be unemployed through no fault of your own. In this case, a person’s unemployment must be caused by an external factor beyond his or her control, such as a layoff. Quitting or being fired for misconduct in the workplace will render you ineligible for said unemployment benefits. 2.  You must meet your respective state’s requirements for the total time worked or the amount of wages you take home in a set amount of time. This marker can be confusing, but it’s safe to assume if you had a long-term job that you lost unexpectedly or without just cause, it’s likely that you meet your state’s requirements. How Unemployment Is Calculated Qualifying for unemployment benefits can be a big relief and one less thing to worry about while you look for a new job. Unemployment compensation is intended to replace or supplement part of your previous income. The compensation you’ll receive depends on the amount you earned while working. Each state uses past earnings to determine your benefit amount. Some states use your highest paid quarter, while others look at annual earnings as a whole. After the amount is calculated, the state will determine weekly benefit amounts, in addition to total minimums and maximums for the eligible recipient. If youre not sure whether youre eligible, file a claim through the unemployment office in your state. They’ll determine your eligibility for unemployment compensation. When You Don't Qualify for Unemployment Not everyone qualifies for unemployment benefits and there are a number of situations when you won’t receive any compensation from the state. The following circumstances may disqualify you from collecting unemployment benefits: Fired for misconductQuit without good causeResigned because of illness (check on disability benefits)Left to get marriedSelf-employedInvolved in a labor disputeAttending schoolFrequent unexcused absencesInsubordinationHarassment When You Quit Your Job Can you collect unemployment if you quit your job? It depends. In most cases, if you voluntarily left employment you are not eligible. However, if you left for good cause, you may be able to collect. Good cause is determined by the state unemployment office and you will be able to make a case for why you are eligible for benefits. Some examples of good cause include medical conditions, family situations, financial difficulty, poor or unsafe working conditions, or relocation difficulties. It’s a good idea to learn about what may be considered good cause by an unemployment office, before you give up on the idea of filing for unemployment. In addition, if you give notice, but the employer doesnt accept the notice and terminates your employment immediately, it is typically considered an involuntary termination and you may qualify for benefits. Conditions such as having to work hours that don’t fit your personal or family life, lack of promotion opportunities, or having to do jobs you don’t like aren’t considered good cause. In these cases, you should hang on to your current job while you look for new employment elsewhere. When You’re Told You Don’t Qualify for Unemployment After you file for unemployment, the state may accept your claim and you’ll receive your benefits. But what if you’re denied benefits or the state asks you to provide additional information? You can file an unemployment appeal and explain your situation in a hearing. The state unemployment office will typically send you a letter that will list the date and time of your hearing. These hearings are generally conducted over the phone.

What to Know About Relocating for a Job - The Muse

What to Know About Relocating for a Job - The Muse What to Know About Relocating for a Job If you’ve ever moved for a job, you know how many itty, bitty details are involved. Depending on how far you’re going- crossing state lines or just heading a few cities over, going abroad, or to the opposite coast- you’re going to want to be as organized as possible so you keep your sanity, along with your new job. Moving for work is a different game than simply moving, typically because the timeline involved in taking a job in a new location is a lot shorter than when you decide on a change of scenery and then focus on getting the new position. Whether you have three months to get everything squared away or a mere three weeks, the comprehensive cheat sheet below will hopefully help make it as seamless as possible. Ask About Relocation Costs Like negotiating a job offer, this one can be tricky. A lot of people may be unwilling or disinclined to ask about financial relocation assistance because they don’t want to seem greedy or demanding. But ask yourself, what’s the absolute worst thing that can happen? You inquire about getting reimbursed for some moving expenses, and the HR person says that’s not something the organization does, so you say “Thank you for letting me know,” and that’s the end of the conversation. The job is still yours, and nobody got hurt. (Can you even imagine a company that would rescind an offer because someone asked for moving help?) If it makes you super uncomfortable to broach the topic, then don’t. As one frequent job relocator explained it to me, “It definitely depends on how far you are moving and how scrappy you want to be.” That is, you can ask friends to help you pack and load a U-Haul or you can pay movers for all of that- in which case you’ll want to try and get at least a couple of thousand dollars from your future employer if it’s flexible on assistance. Depending on the company’s budget- and whether or not it’s even willing to consider footing relocation costs for a new hire- you may get a padded offer, a specific reimbursement amount, or even a signing bonus. One person I spoke with who had two relocations under her belt admitted that she’d never sought help. For one, she says she wanted to make it seem like she was planning the move regardless of whether or not that company offered her a job; it was important for her to compete with local candidates. In retrospect, she says that “there wouldn’t have been any harm in asking for relocation after I had gotten the offer- once they wanted me, why not?” She’s right about that. Never any harm in asking. So, if you’ve decided to look into it, make that query one of the first things you do- after you accept the offer, unless, of course, getting relocation assistance is the only way you’d consider taking the position. Once you’re armed with that knowledge, you can move onto the next very important step. Create a Budget Do this even if you’re not a budget person or have never kept a record of your spending. Moving costs can and will add up quickly. It’ll be far better for you to have a clear sense of what you’re going to end up spending going into it, instead of not thinking about it and later getting an insane credit card bill just as you’re getting settled at your new job in an unfamiliar city. One reason for doing this is that it’ll help you come up with a realistic number for your company in the event that it’s offering some kind of money up front. But, keeping track of moving expenses should be something you do even if you’re the one responsible for all the associated costs. The budget you create will enable you to decide what you can afford to buy now and what will have to wait until later. Some items will be non-negotiable (you can’t get by for very long without a shower curtain or curtains if your bedroom window faces the street and is on the first floor), but other non-essential things you may have to hold off on purchasing until you’ve digested the initial moving fees. The duvet cover and throw pillows in your online shopping cart can wait. Include everything you can possibly think of when you draw this up: packing boxes, movers, startup cable and internet costs, gas (if you’re driving a vehicle), meals along the way, accommodations if the move involves a cross-country drive. But don’t stop at that! Once you have those figured out, determine what other essentials you’ll need to feel at home. For example, your grocery bill is going to be high the first month as you set about stocking your fridge and pantry. While you may be able to salvage some of your staples (cooking oils, spices, unopened cereal boxes), assume you’re starting with nothing. Don’t forget to include all the seemingly small things too: light bulbs, batteries, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies. One particularly seasoned job relocator I spoke with advises the following: “Bump everything up for the first month!” If it’s an international move, plan on an extra large bump, up to 50 or 100% more than you’d figure for a domestic move. Become a List Person Are you anti-list, or do you pride yourself on your great ability to keep running mental lists of both personal and professional to-dos? Now is the time to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard. With an exciting, new job looming, this isn’t the appropriate moment to rely on your memory. There are simply far too many odds and ends to consider for that. You’re going to want to save all your brain power to impress your new boss, not to remember if you changed your address at the post office. Along with lists, spreadsheets can be a really handy way of keeping track of things; in fact, you could create an entire spreadsheet on who to notify of a change your address. While you can probably take care of most of this online, you will want to be comprehensive and diligent. We’re talking post office, financial institutions, health insurance, magazines you subscribe to, voter registrar, friends and family. And, because you definitely don’t want to get stuck paying for services you’re no longer using, make a list of all of the providers you no longer need. That’s gas, electricity, cable, internet and notify them of the date you no longer need service. While you’re in the list-making zone, note all of the items you’re going to need that first week- from your toothbrush, to your air mattress, to your lucky jeans, to your coffee maker, even a few outfits for the office. Make sure to pack away these items in a box that you can easily access right away. As much as you might think you’ll be able to unpack quickly, you should be prepared to be very busy that first week (not to mention exhausted). You don’t want to have to say no to drinks with your new team because you have to go home to find that box with all your work shirts. Start Building Your Network When I moved to NYC fresh out of graduate school, I had several friends who’d been living there for years, and while I was psyched to have a community of people off the bat, I was reluctant to insert myself into their already bustling lives. I wanted to hang out with them on weekends and grab a drink with them on a random Thursday night, but I didn’t intend to make plans with them five days a week. And so I did everything I could to make some new friends and begin building my own network. My grandmother’s college roommate who’d been living in NYC for nearly 50 years? I looked her up, and she quickly became my movie and theater pal. My sister’s good friend from high school? I emailed her and asked if she wanted to grab dinner one night. Fast forward eight years, and I was in her wedding party. I joined a running group and met people there who’ve become lifelong buds. If you like sports, consider joining a recreational league. An experienced mover notes that “It's a really good way to make actual friends instead of relying on meeting people ‘out.’” But these people can be more than just people you meet for brunch on Saturdays; consider them a part of your growing network. Having a strong and thriving professional community is a huge asset, and it’s crucial even when you’re 100% content in your current role. To build a network from the ground up in a new city, get in the habit of saying yes. Make an effort to get out and be social. Moving to a new city can be lonely, even if you love your job. And speaking of your gig, take advantage of your office’s social gatherings- having pals around the workplace can easily turn a stressful day around, and getting to know your co-workers is a great way to quickly expand your network. So even if you’re more introverted than extroverted, go out of your way to accept invitations. You’ll be glad you did in the long run. Locate All the Essentials There are certain things which you should never show up late for. A job interview is one, but so is your first day of work. Even if you interviewed in the space in person months ago and are pretty sure you know where you’re going, do yourself a favor and perform a dry run before you’re officially expected to report. Locate the best driving route, or figure out the easiest and quickest way via public transportation if you’re going to be relying on the bus or subway. In addition, you're also going to want to scope out neighborhood essentials, such as the dry cleaner, laundromat, and grocery store. You might be tempted to order take-out each evening, but your wallet may disagree with your inclination. At the very least, stock up on staples before your first day at the office. Coffee, milk, eggs, a box of cereal, lunch items if you typically BYO the midday meal. And don't forget to grab a bottle or two of your favorite wine or a six-pack of your beer of choice. Sitting down with a drink after a day of trying to keep the office's three Daves straight is something you'll have earned! Make All the Necessary Appointments as Soon as Possible Are you getting a new couch? Is your landlord stopping by with a second set of keys? Do you have to physically go to the DMV or be around for the internet guy? There’s probably a lot of moving-related tasks that'll require you to be away from your desk in the early weeks of your relocation. Do your best to arrange your appointments all at once so you can notify your manager in one fell swoop of your impending absences. I know when I have a couple of out-of-office requests in a given month, I prefer to send my boss one comprehensive email, and I'm pretty sure she (and her inbox) appreciate that practice as well. If that’s not feasible or your moving needs demand that you be flexible- your kitchen table is now on backorder and won't be delivered on the Tuesday morning you planned to work from home- consider having an open dialogue with your boss and let her know that you'll do your best to notify him of your whereabouts as far in advance as possible, but sometimes, you may have to be out on shorter notice than you (or she) would like. Basically, the more heads up you can give people, the less stressful the ask will feel. There’s a lot involved in job relocation, yes- and not least of all because you want to nail it at your first week on the job without thinking of whether or not you bought kitty litter. The many moving parts mean you should try to be as organized as humanly possible from the beginning. If possible, give yourself at least a couple of days (longer if you're moving a great distance or to a really big city from a tiny town) in your new surroundings before the job starts. But if that’s not an option, know that if you follow the above steps, you’ll be able to hit the ground running. Chances are, you’re not the first one at your new company to have relocated for work, and generally, people who have been there, done that are more than happy to share words of wisdom and advice. And that right there is your foolproof conversation starter at the water cooler.

Eastern Promise

Eastern Promise Eastern Promise Eastward ho, business school grads. The jobs they are in Asia. There, in the foreign lands of emerging markets and talent wars, you might find the treasure you seek. Boosted headcount plans aplenty: 42 percent of employers in India, 40 percent in China, 37 percent in Taiwan. How ripe with opportunity! But beware. Over there, your feet are tender and your tongue makes strange sounds. Your presence might not be welcome yet. Tread with wary optimism. Good fortune awaits. [Financial Times]

Army Military Police (MPs) Deployed

Army Military Police (MPs) Deployed Army Military Police (MPs) Deployed LSA ANACONDA, Iraq Hardly a day goes by when the soldiers of the 341st Military Police Company dont experience some sort of hostile activity. We like to call ourselves Combat MPs,” said Sgt. Mark Estes of the 341st, an Army Reserve unit from San Jose, Calf. …What we do keeps us on our toes every day. The 341st is tasked with clearing and monitoring the main supply route from Logistical Support Area Anaconda south to the border of the 1st Armor Divisions area of responsibility. What that entails, says Estes, … is being briefed at about 6:30 in the morning and then driving the route to our checkpoint. We look for any hostile activity, enemy personnel, or that looks out of place from previous runs. Estes said once they travel the route and are sure its clear, they radio back to the convoy commanders and let them know its safe. But their job doesnt end there. After the convoy is clear we stop along the route and wait for trouble, Estes said. Almost everyday something happens along the route and we need to be close by to react. The something Estes said is anything from Improvised Explosive Devices, or IED, to small arms fire or rocket-propelled grenade attacks to vehicle breakdowns. The Iraqis know the routes we use and conceal IEDs along this and other supply routes almost every day, Estes said. IEDs are one of the biggest problems. They are getting more sophisticated and more deadly. Sometimes you cant even tell if an IED is a piece of debris or what it is. Enemy personnel has done almost anything imaginable with IEDs, Estes said. Theyll bury them along the road or hide them under a dead animal on the road, he said. When we drive the route we try to stay in the middle of the road. Most of the IEDs we have experienced have been to one side or the other. If the MPs find something suspicious along the route they radio back to their headquarters and will stop traffic. Stopping traffic along the main supply route, or MSR  is like shoveling sand with a fork. The locals will stop for a short period of time until they become impatient. If traffic doesnt move in short order, they will do anything to get around the blockage. Sometimes, if weve stopped traffic for some reason, the Iraqis will cross over into the opposite lane and travel in the wrong direction, Estes said. What they dont realize is that what we are doing is trying to protect them as well as our soldiers. We dont want anybody hurt. What is sad is that it is their own people causing this. Spc. Juan Cruz II, Military Policeman, often stands ready on the Squad Attack Weapon, or SAW, in the turret of the HUMVEE. However, Cruz wasnt always traveling the MSR with the patrols. My original job for the company is supply specialist, Cruz said. But we are short handed and need the manpower. So when my first sergeant asked for volunteers, I said yes. According to Cruz, before he ever went on a patrol he was brought up to speed by his fellow soldiers. Doing a patrol is a lot different than sitting in a supply room, Cruz said. We work as a team and watch each others backs. Now, Id rather be on a patrol with my team than doing paperwork. Even though its a little dangerous, it has made the time here go by so much quicker. And I feel like I am making a difference here. Not every day is good, Cruz said. Some days here are great? like when we (U.S. Forces) captured Saddam Hussein. Some days are long and others are short. I just try to keep as busy as I can. Cruz said he looks forward to going home and seeing his family. Cruz received the call he was coming to Iraq one week before his wedding. I was mobilized the day after I was married, Cruz said. When I get time off, I call and talk to my wife. This has been very hard for her. But shes doing okay, especially since she knows when Ill be home. A good thing, according to Cruz, is that the Iraqi people are starting to change. These people are strong, Cruz said. They just had a bad leader who didnt care about them. They are starting to realize that we are here to help them. Things are always getting better. When we stop on the side of the road and see the smiles on the kids faces, its awesome. We know they havent smiled like that in a long time. Why Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage - The Muse

Why Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage - The Muse Why Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage You’ve probably seen (at least) some of the constant complaints that women just talk wrong, all the time. If so, you’re probably wondering what we’re doing that’s so terrible. Sometimes it’s vocal fry- talking in a low, “fried”-sounding voice. Oh, but do note that if we talk “normally”, without vocal fry, we are annoyingly high-pitched. Other times it’s saying “just” (really). Or, of course, upspeak. (“My name is Jennifer? I’m the new project manager?”) (Note: There’s more going on here than just gender- this piece notes that uptalk is not typically associated with African-American women, while this article notes differences in how English is spoken internationally.) The feminist internet has handled this with aplomb (here, here, here, here, here, here, and- hilariously- here), both sarcastically dispatching with these complaints, as well as providing trenchant criticism of the not-so-veiled misogyny inherent in these charges. So let me just add one thing: These vocal techniques can be a tool to get things done. And as with all tools, using these vocal techniques at the wrong time can lead to undesired results. So, I want to talk about how and when to use stereotypically female speech patterns effectively for your own purposes. The Many Uses of Uptalk Men and women frequently use upspeak to indicate that something’s sort of a question, but we’d honestly really like the person to agree with the stated option. “Should we meet at 2? ” allows for many acceptable answers, while “We’re meeting at 2? ” indicates that the meeting will take place at 2 PM unless you have a serious objection. In a 2013 New York Times piece, researchers reported that both men and women used uptalk when giving declarative statements, for the purpose of confirming that they’re being understood. (“Turn left at the light?”) Perhaps more importantly: “Uptalk, the researchers found, could also serve a strategic purpose through a technique known as ‘floor-holding,’ in which the speaker, anticipating an interruption by the listener, tries to stave it off by using a rising tone at the end of a statement. Floor-holding is the vocal equivalent of holding up your palm, as if to say, ‘Wait, I’m not finished!’” Since women often report being interrupted more (see: How to Get Heard in Meetings), a defense mechanism against interruption seems more than reasonable. You’re probably already using upspeak for many of these purposes. When could we maybe use it more deliberately? Creating Quality in an Inherently Unequal Situation Most of the vocal techniques women are criticized for do in fact put you in a non-dominant position. Non-dominant doesn’t necessarily mean subordinate- sometimes it means deliberately equal. Why would you want to be in a non-dominant- or even momentarily subordinate- position? OMG, lots of reasons. First, equality is just good for its own sake. More specifically, is it your job to help people, or gently persuade them? If you’re a teacher, counselor, trainer, or nurse, your effectiveness depends on putting people at ease, and it puts people at ease to lower yourself to a peer level. And if you’re a journalist, spy, or health inspector, lowering yourself to the level of total non-threat- someone of little consequence, left to observe in the background- is of obvious value. I teach GRE and GMAT math to adults. These are college graduates and professionals, some of whom work on Wall Street. A lot of people have what I like to call “math trauma.” That is, they’re pretty sure they’re smart- until someone brings up math, and then they’re right back in third grade. I use upspeak and “just” literally all the time when teaching math, in order to create and maintain a sense of ease and equality. This assures students- without having to say it, which would be hella awkward- that I’m not here to lord my skills over them or make them feel dumb. “You can’t divide out the x because we don’t know it might be equal to zero, so instead you just factor it out?” Ooh, that’s a gentle suggestion. Now it’s your turn! Yay math! Socratic Questioning The Socratic method is a way of leading someone to a conclusion by only speaking in questions, causing that person to have to get there via his own answers. In real life, the actual Socratic method can be extremely annoying. Uptalk is sort of the Diet Coke version of the Socratic method. Back to my math example: If I just tell you to square both sides of an equation, you’re probably going to do it without question, because I’m the teacher. If I say, “So we’ll square both sides?”, it keeps you on your toes. I like to add a little bit of doubt (and, occasionally, I do make mistakes!), so even when I’m giving a direction or stating a fact, we’re collaborating. To Bond With Young People Apparently, old people have much more negative reactions to vocal fry. From Amanda Hess on Slate: While people like tend to think that the inflection makes women sound bored, obnoxious and mindless, college aged students, after listening to a recording of a woman who spoke with a vocal fry, determined that the speaker was “professional,” “urban,” “looking for her career,” “not yet a professional, but on her way there” and that the affectation was “a prestigious characteristic of contemporary female speech.” Want to hang with the young people? A little bit of vocal fry- if it’s natural to you anyway- is probably a good move. I sometimes teach young people. I can do one voice while teaching, and then another after class when I stay and answer questions. Young adults are perfectly able to appreciate that older people have a professional self and a more natural self, and slipping into a relaxed voice (but not telling all the details of your wild weekend) is just the right amount of intimacy to create a close and supportive relationship with students. This isn’t specific to teaching. There are plenty of reasons you could want to bond with young people. One good reason is that you might want be selling a product or service. A better reason is that at some point you will be old, and they will be in charge. To Prod Others Along With Their Deadlines and Obligations “Just” is commonly used when someone is late with something. Everyone knows that. “Hey, I just want to follow up…” is a concise way of saying, “I don’t want to be a jerk, but you should have taken care of this by now.” In fact, adding “just” is actually MORE aggressive than not: Could you follow up on that email I sent you last Friday? (Threat level: 2/10) Could you just follow up on that email I sent you last Friday? (Threat level: 5/10) From Lesley Kinzel on XOJane, about using uptalk to the same effect: I use uptalk as a way of saying, “I expect you to respond to this.” I’ve never thought of this as exerting pressure, but having given it more consideration, that is absolutely what I am doing. By offering my points as questions, I am all but demanding that the listener “answer” them, and exploiting powerful social conditioning that it is rude to leave a pointed question ignored, especially when it comes from someone in a position of authority. To Get People to Keep Telling You Things Let me give you an example. Elliot, who was hired two weeks after me to do the same job? He’s feeling very comfortable right now. He’s telling me a story about getting hired. We’re bonding. He’s getting to the part of the story about salary negotiation. I want to know how much money he makes so I know if I’m being treated unfairly and/or should ask for a raise. Time for vocal fry, upspeak, and “just” all at once. The message: I am not a threat. Tell me everything. And then you get the information and use it to make more money. And finally… Talk Like (Many) Young Women to Get Young Women as Customers I do. It’s just obvious? 6 ways to know it might be time to finally quit your job

6 ways to know it might be time to finally quit your job 6 ways to know it might be time to finally quit your job Sometimes, after many years, it becomes abundantly clear that you need to leave your job.Whether it’s your first position out of college and you feel like you’re going nowhere, or you’ve racked up decades at the same company and don’t have as much to show for it as you’d hoped by now, here are potential signs that it could be time for you to move on.You’re not adding to your skills arsenalLeaders should never stop learning, according to author and ethnographer Simon Sinek. But neither should the employees who report to them.Camilla Cho writes in The Muse that if you’re not gaining any knowledge, you might need to make an exit.“If your learning curve has flattened out or you’re really not feeling challenged, this may signal a need to move on,” she writes. “You may not be learning something new every day on the job, but you should be improving upon your core skills and picking up new ones. You often have to take this into your own hands, of course - asking to be involved in a new project, signing up for courses you’re interested in, or attending a relevant conference or seminar in your discipline, for example.”She continues, saying if you can’t take any of these routes at your employer, that “it’s a sign that the company is not serious about investing in your career development.”Your boss doesn’t give you any autonomyScience says that many people like some autonomy on the job, but don’t always get it. Does your boss let you express your creativity when working on projects? Or contribute new ideas that eventually come to fruition in some form? Not feeling empowered at work - where you spend so much time each week - can really weigh on you. You’re constantly making excuses about itThere’s only so much you can take.Career expert Alison Doyle writes in The Balance that a possible sign it’s time to jump ship is when “you find yourself justifying your job.”“If there’s more to complain about than to praise, know that you can find a job that offers more positive than negative, and you should get ready to start looking for it,” Doyle writes. You’re not getting paid better for doing more workJacquelyn Smith writes in Forbes that “your job duties have changed/increased, but the pay hasn’t” could be a signal to go.“Sometimes there’s a good reason for this,” she writes, but if downsizing has moved your team into double time, but nowhere near double pay, it may be time to move on. “That’s especially true if the company is performing well, but it’s not reflected in your salary or other rewards,” Smith continues. You haven’t found meaning in your work yetWhile science says that many millennials want to feel like their work contributes to a good cause, you don’t have to be a young person to be in the same boat. Finding meaning in your job can be a rewarding feeling.Either way, here’s what to do if you’re not quite ready to leave your job yet, but you’re trying to find inspi ration in your current situation.Your manager never listens to your teamEffective supervisors hear their reports out. If you have a boss who would do cartwheels at the drop of a hat for one of the higher-ups, but has never taken you or your concerns seriously, you might want to get out while you can.Chances are, if they have a history of completely disregarding your intentions, thoughts, and honest feedback, they will continue to do so.But you don’t have to put up with it.

Learning to Think Like a Lawyer

Learning to Think Like a Lawyer Learning to Think Like a Lawyer Guest writer Henry Dahut, Esq., author of Marketing The Legal Mind and founder of GotTrouble.com, provides insights into learning to think like a lawyer. Careful. A Career In Law Could Change The Way You Think. When asked why I became a lawyer, I usually say that it seemed like a smart thing to do. Unlike some of my law school classmates, I had no illusions of becoming either a great advocate or a legal scholar. All I wanted was a comfortable income and a respectable station in life. For me, law was a safe career choice, not a passion. My only concern was that as a creative, emotive, right-brain type, I would not be able to think like a lawyer, examining a situation from all angles in a logical way, for example. Then, an old and slightly intoxicated lawyer I met at a brewery told me that the real danger was that once you start thinking like a lawyer it becomes difficult to think any other way. That process began on the first day of law school when the dean told our petrified first-year class that before we could become lawyers we had to learn how to think differently. One student had the nerve to ask the dean how we would know when he had learned to think like lawyers. The Dean shot back  with, When you get paid to think! I soon saw how thinking like lawyers actually meant altering our reasoning structures. For example, memory, while important to success in law school, stood a distant second to learning how to reason like a lawyer. Law professors liked nothing more than weeding out students who might memorize well but could not think through issues on their feet. Thinking Like A Lawyer Thinking like a lawyer demands thinking within the confines of inductive and deductive forms of reasoning. As law students, we entered a world of rigorous dialogue in which abstractions are formulated and then described- usually leading to the discovery of a general principle or rule, which is then distinguished from another general rule. We learned how to narrow and intensify our focus. And in the Pavlovian spirit, we were rewarded when we performed these tasks well and ridiculed when we performed them poorly. The process taught us how to think defensively: We learned how to protect our clients (and ourselves) and why we needed to proceed slowly, find the traps, measure, and calculate the risk. And, above all, we learned to never, ever let the opposition see you sweat! We soon discovered that, as lawyers in training, there was more work than we could realistically accomplish- unless, of course, we spent almost every waking hour in pursuit of legal knowledge. The competitive nature of the learning process drove us even harder, reinforcing some views and perceptions while diminishing others- all of which would eventually alter the very nature of how we thought. The goal, of course, was for us to become rational, logical, categorical, linear thinkers- trained to separate what is reasonable from what is not and what is true from what is false. Having learned to think in a new way, we had less tolerance for ambiguity. A new mental structure was forming- a new set of lenses through which to view the structure of human affairs. It was everything we had hoped for- a quantum leap forward; a kind of intellectual transcendence. We had every reason to believe that soon we would be paid to think. A New Perspective of the World I had just enough left-brain skills to get me through law school and the bar. The sheer mental gymnastics necessary are a tribute to the plasticity of the human mind. Yet it is worth pondering both what we gained from the process and what we may have lost. The values we learned in law school began to spill over into our personal lives. Unconsciously, we begin to relate to and observe others within the context of our new way of thinking. It began to color our views, opinions, and judgments. In the process, we lost some friends and acquired new ones who were more likely to see and understand the world as we did. The old lawyer I met in the brewery was right: Learning to think like lawyers made us less capable of the kind of emotive thinking necessary to make creative choices, manage, and inspire people, and respond quickly to change. Fortunately, however, in learning how to think like lawyers, we learned how to learn â€" we became autodidactic. And, for this reason alone, it was worth the price of admission. Today, thousands of lawyers who want to get back in touch with their right-brain selves are finding new careers in many different professions. Myself included. I practiced law for thirteen years and built a small and successful litigation firm. Ten years later, I transitioned out of full-time law and found my professional calling in marketing and branding â€" a creative leap for a lawyer indeed.
